FireBirdForge

A traditional blacksmith offering personally designed, hand forged, ironwork for home and garden.
Specialising in Archaeological and authentic reproductions for historic houses and re-enactors from any period.

About The Forge

Firebird forge was set up and has been run by David Mortimer (Mort) since the year 2000.
Mort was originally self taught but went on to gain government funding to train at Hereford College on the famous NETS scheme.
The forge is currently located at the heart of the Buckhurst Estate in East Sussex near the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells.
The building itself is 1500 square ft in size and has six permanent coke fuelled forging places along with three power hammers and various other metalworking related machinery.

Techniques

The main techniques of blacksmithing share many similarities with traditional carpentry. We often use tennon joints to join items of ironwork and the function of rivets share the same structual purposes as wooden pegs in a timber frame.

Address

The forge is located between Groombridge and Hartfield, close to Tunbridge Wells, in one of the oldest country estates in England. Unfortunate the forge is not open to the general public, without an appointment (sorry).
