Blacksmith Courses

Tuition in Traditional Blacksmithing

Basic tuition in traditional blacksmithing techniques will be on a day course basis at a cost of £220 per person per day. Multiple day bookings are welcome and a discount can apply to multiple day bookings. There are only two students per day unless a group booking is requested.

The forge is now equipped with two swage blocks (large and small), two cone mandrels (large and small); a Sahinler SM40 Powerhammer for the larger section work and a Samuel Platt Hercules power hammer for the really large stuff! I have been teaching blacksmithing at festivals for the last ten years and I am fully insured to teach a range of traditional crafts.

Due to my background in forging historic replicas, any enquiries from re-enactors will be welcome. Although tea, coffee and biscuits are provided free of charge throughout the day, there is no lunch offered on any course so please remember to bring a packed lunch. Facilities at the forge include a small kitchen area to re-heat food.

If you are interested in booking a tuition day, either for yourself or for a present, then please either e-mail me at morts4@btinternet.com or phone/text me at 07525 242315. All bookings are made via email. I am only insured to teach individuals over the age of 16 years old (students from 13 years old to 16 years can possibly attend but must be accompanied by a full paying parent – please contact me first).

Tuition

Tuition days are run throughout the year and must be booked at least 4 weeks before the day. A deposit of the total cost can be sent by instant bank transfer and must be received at least two weeks before the booked date.

If you need to cancel the tuition day then I must be informed at least three weeks before the booked day in order for you to rebook another date. If I cancel the day then you will receive a full refund or the offer of another day. If you have suffered an accident and are no longer fit enough to Blacksmith, then you will receive a full refund. Specialist training in Composite Pattern welding (Damascus steel), axe and bladesmithing and specialist firewelding can be booked. These courses require specialist materials and preparation and so are charged at £200 per person, per day.

Address

The forge is located between Groombridge and Hartfield, close to Tunbridge Wells, in one of the oldest country estates in England. Unfortunate the forge is not open to the general public, without an appointment (sorry).
